The 2011 FIRST Robotics Competition season is quickly arriving. Team 604 is currently holding safety workshops to prepare all members for the upcoming build season, so we can have an injury-free one. There will also be other workshops over winter break in final preparation for the season.
We have also been helping out on the FIRST Lego League scene. Team 604 has volunteered at six tournaments so far, and run our very own tournament, the Quixilver Qualifier on November 13. Congratulations to the champions, Team 455: The Los Altos Geek Squad. Full results and more information can be found here. Team 604 also mentored four different FLL teams, with two advancing to the 2nd Tier regional level, and one advancing to the state championships. More information on their achievements can be found here.
We packed our robot into the crate last night, and today FedEx came and picked it up to ship to our first competition, the Silicon Valley Regional on March 18-20. We have chosen to withhold 65 pounds of our robot, as allowed by FIRST, and will continue to make improvements and adjustments until competition!
Today, FIRST released the 2010 challenge, Breakaway! This challenge offers an unusual twist to the traditional game of soccer. Played on a 27 by 54 ft. rectangular field with bumps, two alliances—each consisting of three robots—attempt to earn points by scoring soccer balls in their alliance goal while being defended by the opposing alliance. Each soccer ball scored is one point, and can be herded or kicked from anywhere on the field. During the last twenty seconds of each match, robots can hang off of a tower-like structure located on the playing field for bonus points. Two points are earned when a robot hangs off of a tower—not touching the ground—and three points are awarded if a robot is suspended in mid-air off another robot. The end result of this new game is a challenge that brings enthusiastic students across the world together in an unprecedented combination of technology and sporting excitement!

FIRST released the second game hint for the 2010 FRC Challenge!
It appears to be a CAD render of the field wall, but is so special about it? Only time will tell!

It's part of the field border, but what's so significant about it?
Remember to download an encrypted copy of the 2010 manual before Kickoff, so FIRST‘s server doesn’t get bogged down on Kickoff day! The encryption key will be announced at the Kickoff event.

Team 604 would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
We hope everybody is ready for the 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition season!
Kickoff is just over a week away!
FIRST released the first game hint for the 2010 FRC Challenge!
Is it a game piece? Or some sort of track? Or does it have a deeper meaning? Let the speculation begin!

What could this be?
After six weeks of hard work, our robot is now complete and shipped off to our first competition. We can finally catch up on all the sleep we lost during build season. See you all in a few weeks at the Silicon Valley Regional!

Our robot on ship day
At 6am today, our team went to San Jose State University for the local 2009 FRC Kickoff Event. There were representatives from over 30 different Bay Area teams at the event, all eagerly waiting for the new challenge to be released and the new build season to start.
The 2009 challenge, “Lunacy,” is played on a 27 by 54ft rectangular field, where two alliances, each consisting of 3 robots, try to score multi-colored spheres into “trailers” attached to the opposing alliance’s robots while simultaneously defending their own “trailer” (more information about the game and the game animation can be found at here).
We wish all teams best of luck during the next short, sleep-deprived six weeks of their lives!
