Sacramento Regional 2009

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

The Sacramento Regional was held at UC Davis on March 27-28, 2009.

After setting two of the highest scores of the competition in the first two matches — 88 and 98 — teams started playing heavy defense on us; we were pinned by two robots for an entire match.  Despite this, we still won six out of nine matches in the qualification rounds.  Some matches were very close; we lost one match due to a two-point difference.

We were picked by fifth seed Team 599 and then picked Team 1662.  Our alliance won the first quarterfinal double-elimination match 92 to 78, but just like at the Silicon Valley Regional, we unfortunately lost the next two.

Still, we walked away from the Sacramento Regional with another award for our unique camera tracking system, the Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control Award.

Our next competition is the FIRST Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia, where teams from all over the world will come to compete.  Wish us luck!

Silicon Valley Regional 2009

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

The Silicon Valley Regional, our home regional, was held at the San Jose State University Event Center on March 13-14, 2009.

After winning six matches and losing two in the qualification matches, our team seeded fourth overall and picked Team 846, the Funky Monkeys from Lynbrook High School, and Team 8, The Vikings from Palo Alto High School, to join our alliance. The alliance moved on to win the first double-elimination match in the quarterfinals 88 to 48, but unfortunately lost the next two 64 to 69 and 52 to 72.

Regardless, our team managed to win three awards: the Best Website Award, the Delphi Driving Tomorrow’s Technology Award for our two-stage camera tracking system, and the Underwriter Laboratories Industrial Safety Award.

We are looking forward to our future competitions!

Maker Faire 2008

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

The San Mateo based Maker Faire was a great success for Team Quixilver and the FIRST community. Team 604 spread the word of FIRST to over 65,000 people, including hundreds of inventors, independent companies, and children ecstatic to delve into LEGO robotics. While having such a strong appeal to younger children, numerous bay area high school students also demonstrated great interest in starting FRC teams at their high schools.

Silicon Valley Regional 2008

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

The Silicon Valley Regional, located in the San Jose State University Event Center, was Quixilver’s only regional event in 2008. Even with the best competition of the Silicon Valley, this year’s robot exceeded everyone’s expectations with robustness and “quick” maneuvering. After building an extremely functional robot, providing extensive assistance to teams in need, and demonstrating national and international outreach, the Leland Robotics Team was honored and overwhelmed to win the Chairman’s Award a second year in a row.

Gunderson Regional FLL Tournament 2007

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

The Leland Robotics Team volunteered at the regional FLL tournament held at Gunderson High School. With the majority of the team showing up, we were able to help run almost the entire competition floor. Furthermore, the effort our team members put into mentoring was apparent, as all of the teams we mentored were high scoring teams.

FLL Scrimmage 2007

Friday, December 7th, 2007

The Leland Robotics Team saw the need for a scrimmage before the local FIRST Lego League (FLL) tournament, so we decided to host a scrimmage for local teams. Six FLL teams came to the Leland High School cafeteria to experience a competition-like setting. The scrimmage helped show the weak and strong points of many teams and helped them to be more prepared for the regional tournament.

CalGames 2007

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

The Leland Robotics Team attended the CalGames 2007 off-season tournament in Woodside, CA. Although faced with mechanical difficulties, we still managed to win our first four matches. At the end of the qualifying matches, we ranked 5th of 30 teams. Joining with Lynbrook (Team 846) and Phantom Robotics (Team 675), Team 604 continued into the semifinals before being bested by the tournament-winning alliance. After this excellent performance, the team is looking forward to the beginning of build season on January 5th, 2008.

Annual Starbucks Demo 2007

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

The Leland Robotics Team held a fundraiser at Starbucks. There, we promoted CalGames, the upcoming off-season tournament, demoed with VEX and FRC robots, and fostered the love for robotics in their community. Thanks to generous community support, we were able to raise over $1,100 in one morning! This brings us one step closer to our fundraising goal.
