2012 Google Silicon Valley Regional Conclusion

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

After the success at the Sacramento Regional two weeks prior, FIRST Team 604 came home to compete at the Google Silicon Valley Regional ready for some intense competition. We made a few changes to our robot since Sacramento and they paid off. After ten qualification matches, we seeded 14th and later moved up to the 8th alliance captain out of 50 teams. Working with our scouters, we formed an alliance with FIRST Teams 2073, EagleForce, and 192, GRT. Although we narrowly lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions, FIRST Teams 971, 254, and 766, we gave them one of their closest matches.

The day before, Mr. Mori, our long time mentor since 2005, won the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award. He will go on to compete for the Woodie Flowers Award at the Championship Event in St. Louis. You can read his nominating essay here. This brings the number of Woodie Flower Finalist Award recipients on our team to three, including Mrs. Arrington (Sacramento 2010) and Mrs. Best (Sacramento 2011). Our team is so lucky to have such amazing mentors!

Mr. Mori was not the only person on our team to receive recognition. On Saturday, Kunal M., a senior on our team, was recognized as one of two Dean’s List Finalists at the Silicon Valley Regional for his passion and leadership in FIRST. He will go on to compete for the Dean’s List Award at the Championship Event in St. Louis.

The good news did not end here. Our team was honored to received the most prestigious award given at the event, the Regional Chairman’s Award. We will now compete against all of the other regional winners at St. Louis for the coveted Championship Chairman’s Award.

FIRST Team 604 would like to thank our sponsors, mentors, parents, and alumni for all of their support. None of this would be possible without them. We will see you all at the FIRST Championship Event in St. Louis in a few short weeks!

2012 Sacramento Regional

Monday, March 19th, 2012

FIRST Team 604 started another successful competition season at the 2012 Sacramento Regional, held at the UC Davis ARC Pavilion. Originally faced with some technical issues, our team was able to overcome some of them and use our skill on the coopertition(TM) bridge to our advantage. Completing a total of four coopertition(TM) balances, we seeded 4th, and were the 3rd alliance captain. After picking FIRST Team 840, Aragon High School, we were able to complete the alliance with our close friends, FIRST Team 1323, Madera High School. However after lunch, we were plagued with more technical issues, and fell to the eventual finalists, composed of FIRST Teams 3669, 3256, and 3598. We are extremely proud of FIRST Team 3256, a team we have extensively worked with, for their stellar performance and their Entrepreneurship Award on Friday night.

The day ended with a pleasant surprise with the news that we had won the Engineering Inspiration Award. This award has officially qualified us for the FIRST Championship in St. Louis, MO, and NASA will be paying the $5,000 entry fee as a reward for our accomplishments.

We would also like to thank everyone who stuck with us through our difficulties with the webcast, we have fixed them for the Silicon Valley webcast. If you have any comments or feedback, please email us. The match videos will be split and uploaded to The Blue Alliance sometime this week. Stay tuned for updates!

2012 Robot Unveiling — Introducing “Sureshot”

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

FIRST Team 604 will be competing this weekend at the Sacramento Regional. Remember to watch us on MadStream!

Here is our latest creation for the world to see! Many thanks to our sponsors and friends who helped make this happen.

Name: “Sureshot”

Dimension: 27″W x 36″L x 59″H

Weight: 118 lbs

Concept: Our team recognized early on in the season that with the limited number of balls on the field, acquiring balls quickly and making every shot count would be very important. These shots also need to be taken quickly without needing much time to line up, even if the robot is under heavy defense. Furthermore, a low center of gravity was desired for easier bump traversal and bridge balancing. With a full-width pickup, high speed elevator, and a software-automated turret, our robot achieves all these criteria and is able to make close range shots quickly with near 100% accuracy, even under heavy defense.

Features:

  • Custom two-speed shift-on-the-fly transmission: 6 and 17 feet per second
  • 8wd “West Coast Drive” base: Light, robust, and easy to maintain
  • Full-width pickup: Easy ball acquisition, doubles as a bridge manipulator
  • Elevator/hopper: ~0.5 second lift to 84″ high, counterbalanced via constant force spring, holds 3 balls, very low center-of-gravity when retracted
  • Turreted shooter: ~0.5 second 360 degree rotation, 2 position hood
  • Software-assisted operation: Automatic pickup and shoot sequences, automated turret aiming, off-board image processing for maximum performance

2012 Build Season Recap

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

The last two weeks have been extremely hectic, so here’s what we have been up to:

On February 11, we held a demo at the Microsoft Store at Valley Faire Mall on Stevens Creek Boulevard, San Jose. We brought robots from 2006, 2009, and 2010. The 2009 Lunacy robot was connected to a Microsoft Kinect, and we allowed customers to try out driving our robot. We kept the 2006 and 2010 robots on display and to help advertise our team and FIRST. We gave leaflets regarding our team, FRC, FLL, and other aspects of FIRST to the visiting customers and even left more at the store for future use. We informed visitors about FIRST, what it has to offer to students of all ages, and invited them to come to the Silicon Valley Regional at San Jose State University. Visitors of all ages were enthralled with the robot and intrigued by the efforts of FIRST. In all, we felt that the demo was a success and we look to further our partnership with Microsoft and their stores. Thanks to the Microsoft Store for allowing us to use their facilities and time to advertise our team and FIRST.

We have also launched a partnership with Elevation250. Elevation250 is an organization which provides clean drinking water to 250 people in Africa for every $5000 pledged. They hike Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, to raise funds and awareness. This year, FIRST Team 604 has partnered with Elevation250 by providing them logistical support and small robotic toys for them to hand out to the children of the village in which they are acclimatizing for their climb. They are going to help us spread the FIRST message to a larger audience and show how science and technology can help poor children in need of support. Thanks to alumnus Natalie Mukhtar for helping us in this partnership.

FIRST Team 604 has also been in the news lately. We were featured in the Leland High School newspaper, the Charger Account. We will also be featured in the February 24 edition of the Almaden Resident.

As build season winds down to an end, the construction of our robot also comes to a halt. Our robot has been officially completed, and looks poised to compete at the Sacramento Regional. At exactly 6:04, we held our annual team banquet in a night of fun and relaxation after 6 weeks of hard work. We enjoyed good food and watched a commemorative video summarizing build season. The robot was then bagged at 11:51pm, as we bid our team members good rest for the next 5 days of ski week break!

Keep an eye out for our robot unveiling in the near future!

2012 Week 3 & 4 Update and a Teaser!

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Week 3 was a week of steady gains, as fabrication continues for the robot. Bumpers have been fashioned and are ready for use. Our drivers have been practicing on robots from former years, especially our 2010 robot. We bought new batteries and chargers. The chargers have arrived and are currently having powerpoles put on them. Thursday was 8th grade recruitment night at our school. We demoed our robots from 2006, 2009, and 2010. Many interested 8th graders came by to check out our robots and to learn more about FIRST and what we do at FIRST Team 604.

The production of our robot is coming along, with the chassis built and the scoring mechanism well under way. We received new batteries and have crimped and wired them to be compatible with our new chargers and our robot. Reviews for the various award submissions have begun.

And our robot teaser for this year is out! Join the discussion on Chief Delphi here.

2012 Week 2 Update

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Week 2 was another week of great progress for FIRST Team 604, as we are fully on schedule. With designs nearing completion, the robot is coming together.

The practice field is complete, as the finishing touches were just put on the bridge a few minutes ago. We have also found a way to recognize the white rectangles on the backboards of the hoops, using camera-tracking and some math.

During Week 1, we had gathered donations for Loaves and Fishes. This week, partnering with a community service club at our school, we carried out the event successfully. We were able to pack lunches for many underprivileged children around our community, and spread the message of FIRST with our caring actions.

2012 Week 1 Update

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

After a successful build week, FIRST Team 604 is poised to make a solid run at this year’s FRC challenge, Rebound Rumble. All aspects of the team made progress. Designs for this year’s robot are almost complete. Using SolidWorks CAD software, 604 has been able to accurately model the design and physics behind our robot. Some of our programmers tested out sensors from the kit of parts as well as the Microsoft Kinect (video below), and attended a C++ workshop from one of our mentors. With our field parts almost complete, we should have adequate amount of time to test our robot.

We have also started fundraising through a second e-waste drive. More details can be found here. Over the course of the past week, we rounded up our school’s old, outdated computers to dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. We are also participating in a project to feed children in need. Organized by Leland Key Club, the Loaves and Fishes program is designed to give a meal to youths in need.

2012 Build Season Kickoff

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

FIRST Team 604 had an incredibly productive kickoff day. The day began by arriving at San Jose State just as the sun rose. Our team helped the kickoff site to set up the kit of parts distribution sites and distribute the kits. After many inspiring and motivational speeches the 2012 game was announced – Rebound Rumble! Following kickoff, we returned back to school to begin brainstorming ideas and think about possible solutions. Members and mentors alike bounced around design ideas to this new exciting challenge. Several team members bought the necessary materials and began to assemble the practice playing field. By the end of the day, we all had a productive day and are looking forward to a great year of learning, cooperation, and fun in this 2012 FIRST Robotics season.
